10 am, it´s about the only sunny and warm day in May. Bernt Rosengren Q is preparing for a recording in a studio just outside Stockholm. Pack up all instrument, a soundcheck and then some coffee. Time for recording, Bernt says ”Could we just run over a tune I wrote out the other day? Just to check what it sounds like”. The sound engineer asks if he should record, and why not? Bernt counts in and we play it through. After a short silence Bernt´s voice is in the headphones ”- I think it sounded quite OK, relaxed and not too perfect”. The tune is Bud Powell´s ”Time Waits”, the first tune your hear on the album. At 6 pm (with a short lunch break) we have recorded 11 more tunes, all except one are first takes. The song order on the album is exactly as we recorded them. Spontaneous, in the moment – just like a concert, but with no audience. // Hans Backenroth, bass & producer.
